Ask anyone what you need to work in the travel industry, and they'll likely say, "A passion for travel." While a genuine enthusiasm for the world certainly helps, it’s not what drives results, negotiates contracts, or manages a crisis.
The truth is, a career in travel is a serious business career. It operates at the intersection of logistics, technology, and global economics. Based on my two decades of experience, here are the six non-negotiable, in-demand business skills that separate the industry veterans from the casual travelers.
1. Data Analysis and Literacy
The days of relying on intuition alone are over. Whether you’re a Product Manager or in Commercial Sales, data is the new currency.
Why it Matters: Understanding customer booking patterns, conversion rates, and supplier performance metrics allows you to pivot quickly. If you can read a spreadsheet and translate that into a clear business recommendation—like adjusting pricing or targeting a specific demographic—you hold significant power. You need to be able to use data to move from 'I think' to 'I know.'
2. Cross-Cultural Communication and Empathy
Travel is inherently global. You will be dealing with partners, suppliers, and customers from every corner of the world, often speaking different languages and operating under different business customs.
Why it Matters: This isn’t just about being polite; it’s about being effective. A negotiation tactic that works in London might alienate a partner in Tokyo or Dubai. Learning to listen actively, adapt your communication style, and respect local business norms is the key to building the long-term, purposeful partnerships that define success.
3. Negotiation and Sourcing Expertise
Whether you're negotiating hotel contracts, GDS agreements, or internal budgets, negotiation is a daily requirement. My time in Sourcing taught me that a good deal is one where both parties feel they've achieved a significant objective.
Why it Matters: The best negotiators don't just focus on the lowest price; they negotiate on value, reliability, and long-term partnership. The ability to secure favourable terms directly impacts profitability and product quality, making it a crucial commercial skill.
4. Resilience and Crisis Management
In travel, something will always go wrong. A volcano erupts, a system fails, or a global event shuts down borders. The industry demands professionals who can operate calmly and effectively under pressure.
Why it Matters: This is the skill of maintaining a positive outlook when the situation is anything but. Leaders must be the calm anchor during the storm, making quick, clear decisions that prioritise customer safety and business continuity. Resilience isn't about ignoring problems; it's about bouncing back swiftly and learning from the chaos of Operations.
5. Tech Fluency (Not Coding, but Context)
You don't need to be a developer, but you must be fluent in the technology that powers the travel ecosystem. This includes everything from APIs and cloud-based reservations systems to automation and AI tools.
Why it Matters: How can you design an efficient Product or propose a forward-looking Strategy if you don't understand the limits and capabilities of your technology stack? Tech fluency is about asking the right questions of your IT partners and understanding the scalability and integration challenges involved in your plans.
6. Systems Thinking (Connecting the Dots)
My progression from Ops to Strategy was proof that seeing the whole picture is everything. Systems thinking is the ability to understand how every department—Sales, Marketing, Product, and Finance—is interconnected.
Why it Matters: It allows you to anticipate the downstream effects of a decision. For example, a great Sales promotion might overload the Operations team, leading to customer service failures. The true professional always asks: "If I change A, what happens to B and C?" This holistic view is the mark of a strategic leader.
